The definition

What is e-commerce attribution software?

In short

E-commerce attribution software records every visit to a shop, keeps the ad click that started it, and joins it to the order the shop later confirms, so revenue and ROAS are reported per channel, campaign and ad rather than per session. It reads orders from the shop system itself and sends the paid order back to the ad platforms as a conversion with its value.

  • The paid order is the conversion

Not the add to cart, not the checkout start and not a browser purchase event. The order comes from the shop, so refunds and cancellations can be netted off the campaign that earned them.

  • Captured where blockers cannot reach

The visit is recorded on your own domain and processed server-side, so a declined banner, an ad blocker or a payment redirect does not decide whether the order has a source. See server-side tracking.

  • The whole path, not the last click

First click, last click, linear and position based over every touch, so the campaign that introduced the customer is visible next to the one that closed. See multi-touch attribution.

  • Revenue back to the platforms

The order value travels to Meta, Google, Microsoft and LinkedIn as an offline conversion, so bidding optimises on revenue instead of carts. See offline conversion tracking.

Why the ad accounts disagree with the shop

Your ad accounts claim 1,704 purchases. The store shipped 1,192.

Each platform counts the purchases it believes it caused, in its own window, from a pixel in the shopper's browser. Add the four up and you have paid for 512 orders that never existed.

  • Every platform counts the same order. Google, Meta, TikTok and Microsoft each take credit, so the blended ROAS in the ad accounts reads 5.2x on a month that returned 3.7x.
  • The pixel fires in the browser. A declined consent banner, an ad blocker, Safari's storage limits or a hosted payment page each remove conversions before anything is counted.
  • The shop's own attribution starts at the shop. The click that landed on a campaign page or a blog first is not part of it.
  • Repeat orders are credited to whatever brought them back, so the channel that acquired a customer worth five orders is never paid for it.
  • Refunds never reach the ad account. The campaign keeps the revenue the customer sent back.
  • Organic social, influencers and AI search land in direct. A bio link without parameters and a cited answer in ChatGPT both arrive nameless.

So the shop's numbers, GA4's numbers and each platform's numbers all differ, and budget is moved on whichever one is open. The order list is right, and nobody is optimising on it.

How the data moves

Every channel in, every paid order back out.

Clicks and visits arrive on your own tracking domain. The order arrives from the shop, natively on Shopify and by webhook or API on everything else. LeadJourney joins them and returns the outcome to the ad accounts.

What the software does

Everything attribution has to do for a shop that buys its own growth.

ROAS on orders, per campaign and per ad

Spend is pulled from every platform you buy on and set against the orders the shop confirmed, so one table prices Google Shopping, Meta prospecting, TikTok creators and Microsoft shopping in the same currency.

Any shop system, one order shape

Shopify connects natively. WooCommerce, Shopware, Magento, a headless build or your own backend post the paid order through a webhook, the REST API or Zapier, Make and n8n, and it is attributed exactly like a Shopify order.

New customers told apart from repeat ones

A returning customer's orders are credited to the channel that acquired them, so lifetime value is reported per channel and a new customer campaign can be optimised on new customers only.

AI search and organic social as their own channels

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot referrals are separated out instead of arriving as direct, and a bio link is a channel even without campaign parameters on it.

The orders your pixels never saw

Every visit is recorded first-party and server-side at 95%+ accuracy, so an ad blocker, a declined banner, an express checkout or a hosted payment page stops costing you the source of an order.

The paid order back in the ad account

Order paid, first order or repeat order, mapped to the event you choose, with the real order value, matched on the click ID and sent server to server rather than fired from a browser.

Live in 21 minutes

E-commerce attribution set up in three steps

One script, one order handover, no re-platforming and no developer.

  1. 1About 5 minutes

    Install the script

One line on your own tracking subdomain, in the theme or through your tag manager. Sessions, campaign parameters and click IDs are recorded from the first visit, on the shop and on any campaign page or blog you run beside it.

  2. 2About 15 minutes

Connect the shop and the ad accounts

Shopify connects in a few clicks. WooCommerce, Shopware, Magento or your own backend hand the paid order over by webhook, the REST API or a Zapier, Make and n8n step. Then connect the platforms you buy on, so spend arrives beside the orders.

  3. 3Same day

    Map the order events

Choose which order event goes back to which platform as what, and which carries revenue: the paid order as a purchase with its value, the first order as a new customer. From then on the feed runs by itself.

What changes

What changes when ROAS is measured on orders you shipped.

Done:

One number, not four

The report reconciles with the order list, so the 512 purchases nobody shipped leave the conversation.

Down:

Cost per new customer

The platforms learn from paid orders instead of add to carts, so bidding buys buyers.

Up:

Budget on the campaigns that sell

Google Shopping at 4.8x and Meta prospecting at 2.9x stop looking the same in a blended figure.

Done:

The first click gets its credit

The creator ad that introduced a customer is visible next to the brand search that closed.

Up:

Revenue per channel over a lifetime

Repeat orders are credited to the channel that acquired the customer, which changes what a customer is worth.

Lasting:

Any shop system, one report

Shopify natively, WooCommerce, Shopware, Magento or a headless build by webhook, all in the same table.

Before LeadJourney, we had no reliable tracking concept for our five-figure ad spend. We were manually building spreadsheet and CRM reports, inaccurate and time-consuming. Within two days, everything was set up. For the first time, I know exactly what I pay per lead and which campaigns actually bring in the best-qualified prospects.

Common questions

E-commerce attribution software, the questions buyers ask

What store owners and their agencies want to know before they replace a pixel per platform.

Which shop systems does LeadJourney work with?

Shopify is the one native integration: connect the store and approve the permissions. WooCommerce, Shopware, Magento, Adobe Commerce, a headless build or your own backend send the paid order through the inbound webhook, the REST API or a Zapier, Make or n8n step, and it is attributed exactly like a Shopify order. Each of the four has a page showing which handover to use: Shopify, WooCommerce, Shopware and Magento.

Why do my ad platforms report more purchases than my shop?

Because each platform counts the purchases it believes it caused, inside its own attribution window, and the same order can satisfy several of them at once. In the month drawn on this page the four accounts claim 1,704 purchases against 1,192 orders shipped, which is a blended 5.2x against a real 3.7x. Counting the order once, from the shop, is what closes that gap.

How is this different from Shopify's own marketing attribution?

Shopify credits an order to the session that placed it, by UTM and referrer, and it is right about that session. It does not see the click that landed on a campaign page before the store, it has spend only where a channel app reports it, and it has no way of sending the paid order back to the ad platform with its value. Keep both open: the shop for orders, LeadJourney for the journey and the ROAS.

Is this a replacement for GA4 or for store analytics?

No, and it is worth being clear about it. LeadJourney is an attribution and reporting layer for marketing: clicks, campaigns, spend, orders and revenue. On-site behaviour, product analytics, merchandising and cohort reporting stay with GA4 and your shop's own reports. What changes is that the marketing numbers stop being reconciled by hand every month.

Does it track repeat customers and lifetime value?

Yes. A returning customer's orders are credited to the channel and campaign that acquired them, so revenue per channel is reported over the customer's life rather than as a first order snapshot. First and repeat orders can also be sent back to the ad platforms as separate events, which is how a new customer campaign stops being optimised on returning buyers.

What happens to refunds and cancellations?

They are read alongside the order they belong to, so the revenue a campaign is credited with is the revenue you kept. On a shop with a high return rate that difference often reverses which campaign looks profitable.

Does it work with a hosted payment page or a checkout on another domain?

Yes. The order arrives from the shop system rather than from a pixel on a success page, so a redirect to a payment provider, an express checkout or a checkout on a different domain cannot lose it. That is also why orders stop reading direct.

Is first-party tracking for a shop GDPR compliant?

Tracking is first-party and consent-aware, data is processed and stored in the EU, and a data processing agreement is part of every plan. It is not a way around consent: what it does is make sure the data you are allowed to collect is not lost to a blocked third party script. See GDPR and security.

How long does setup take, and do I need a developer?

Most shops are reporting inside 21 minutes: one script, the shop connected or one webhook saved, the ad accounts connected and the order events mapped. No developer, and our team will do it with you on a call, with your agency if you work with one.

What does it cost?

Plans are priced on tracked ad spend rather than seats, so your whole team and your agency share one workspace. Every plan starts with a 14 day free trial without a credit card. See pricing.
