How MLK Digital knows which articles bring the customers

A publisher whose acquisition channel is its own editorial, and what changed once each article carried the leads and the revenue it created.

The challenge

Traffic per article, but no idea which ones paid

MLK Digital publishes for a living, so its own growth runs on articles rather than on ad accounts. Somebody searches a topic, reads a piece in one of the magazines, comes back days later and gets in touch. By then the article that started it is several visits back, and analytics has long since moved on to counting the session that converted.

The reporting that existed answered the wrong question. It could rank articles by pageviews and time on page, neither of which anybody buys, and it could not say which pieces produced enquiries or which of those enquiries turned into paying customers. Commissioning the next round of editorial meant betting on what had been read rather than on what had earned.

AI search made the gap wider. A growing share of readers now arrive from an assistant rather than a results page, and most of those visits carry no referrer, so they land in direct traffic. The channel that was growing fastest was the one the numbers could say least about.

The fix

The article travels with the lead

LeadJourney tracks the magazines server-side from the first visit, so the entry page is captured with 95%+ accuracy whatever the reader's browser, ad blocker or cookie choice does, and it stays attached through every later visit rather than being overwritten by the last one.

AI search is recorded as its own set of channels instead of being pooled into direct, so a visit that started in an assistant is counted as what it was. From there the lead carries its article into the sales side, and the report reads article by article: enquiries, customers, revenue.

  • Server-side tracking with 95%+ accuracy, unaffected by ad blockers and iOS
  • AI search separated from direct traffic and reported as its own channel
  • The entry article carried on the lead record, not overwritten by the last visit
  • Every article ranked by the leads and the revenue behind it, not by pageviews

The result

Editorial planned on what earns, not on what is read

Which article

produced the lead and the revenue, across AI and organic search

Andreas can now open a report and see which articles brought enquiries and which brought paying customers, with organic search and AI search counted apart. A piece with modest traffic that produces clients is visible, and so is a popular one that produces none.

That is his account of the setup rather than a measurement of ours, which is why his name and company stand next to it.
