The gap

Buyers research in ChatGPT now. Its ad reporting stops at the click.

Ads Manager reports what happened to your ChatGPT ad clicks inside its window. Your CRM records who actually bought. Nothing joins the two, or tells paid ChatGPT from earned.

ChatGPT Ads on their own

A new channel, measured the way OpenAI can measure it

  • Advertisers get aggregated numbers, never the chat: OpenAI shares no conversation, history or memory, so no report says which question led to the click.
  • The click window is 7, 14 or 30 days, 30 by default, so a deal that closes after that is not a ChatGPT conversion in Ads Manager.
  • Results are dated on the ad interaction by default, and OpenAI asks you to allow at least a day for conversions to appear.
  • View-through conversions within a day of an impression are reported apart, as their own metric, not inside Conversions.
  • The OpenAI pixel runs in the browser and sets its cookies only with measurement consent, so blockers and declined banners remove conversions.
  • The same buyer also clicks links ChatGPT cites in its answers. That traffic is earned, and analytics files it next to the paid clicks or apart, by whatever UTM somebody set.
  • Spend never meets CRM revenue, so cost per closed deal per ChatGPT campaign is a spreadsheet someone builds before the budget review.

ChatGPT Ads with LeadJourney

One journey per buyer, from the paid click to the closed deal

  • Every paid ChatGPT click is captured server-side with its oppref, on your own domain, past ad blockers and declined banners, at 95%+ accuracy.
  • Paid clicks are credited to their ChatGPT campaign, and earned visits from ChatGPT answers stay on the organic ChatGPT source, so the two never blur into one number.
  • The click is kept on the visitor's LeadJourney Click ID, so when they return through brand search weeks later, the ChatGPT campaign is still in the journey.
  • The lead is followed through your CRM, stage by stage, to closed won, or through Shopify and Stripe to the paid order.
  • Qualified leads, won deals and orders go back to OpenAI through the Conversions API with their value, so a conversion-optimised campaign learns from buyers.
  • ChatGPT Ads are measured next to Google, Meta, organic ChatGPT and the other AI engines in one multi-touch model, so each sale is counted once.
  • Spend per campaign meets closed revenue, so ROAS and cost per closed deal read per ChatGPT campaign and ad group.

How it works

ChatGPT Ads conversion tracking in, closed deals back out

All three run on their own once connected. The first records every paid ChatGPT click, the second teaches OpenAI which clicks become revenue, the third keeps paid and earned ChatGPT apart.

  1. 1

Server-side tracking for every ChatGPT ad click

The journey starts recording before the OpenAI pixel would even fire.

    ChatGPT Ads

LeadJourney imports your ChatGPT campaigns, ad groups, ads and spend, and captures every click with the oppref it carries on the landing URL.

    Your website

On your site, sessions, page views, form fills and checkouts are tracked server-side on your own domain, past ad blockers, Safari and declined banners.

The click is kept on the visitor's LeadJourney Click ID and joined to the lead at the form or the order, however many visits later that is.

Revenue, ROAS and cost per closed deal per ChatGPT campaign and ad group, next to every other channel.

  2. 2

Send qualified leads, won deals and orders through the Conversions API

So a conversion-optimised campaign bids for buyers instead of clicks.

    HubSpotSalesforcePipedriveShopify

Your CRM or shop reports the outcome: stage changes, deal value, closed won, the paid order.

LeadJourney matches the outcome to the ChatGPT ad click that started it and attaches the oppref, an event ID and the value with its currency.

    ChatGPT Ads

It reaches OpenAI's Conversions API as a standard event, such as lead_created or order_created. Where the pixel sends the same event ID, OpenAI keeps the first one.

A conversion-optimised campaign learns which ad groups send buyers, so lead quality rises and the cost per customer falls.

  3. 3

Paid and earned ChatGPT, each on its own line

The same buyer can reach you through an ad and through an answer.

    ChatGPT Ads

A buyer asks ChatGPT for a tool and clicks the sponsored card beneath the answer. That click is paid, and it belongs to a campaign.

A week later they ask again, ChatGPT cites your pricing page in its answer, and they click through. That visit is earned, not bought.

LeadJourney keeps both touchpoints on one journey under their own sources, so the campaign and organic ChatGPT each get their share of the deal.

Revenue per ChatGPT campaign beside revenue from organic ChatGPT, so the budget review sees what the ads added to what you already earn.

Your CRM closes the loop

The revenue signal comes from the CRM or shop you already run

LeadJourney follows every ChatGPT Ads lead into your CRM, or every ChatGPT Ads shopper to the paid order, and reads the outcome back out, so the value ends up on the campaign that earned it.

You choose what counts as a conversion

Map any CRM stage or order to an OpenAI conversion event. Qualified lead, closed won, purchase, or all of them.

Lead quality becomes the optimisation target

When OpenAI learns which leads qualify and which stall, a conversion-optimised campaign favours the ad groups that send the first kind.

Sent server to server

No tag to fire, nothing for an ad blocker or a declined cookie banner to remove.

Reporting

The questions Ads Manager cannot answer

Every one of these is a report in LeadJourney rather than an export project. Ads Manager stays where you buy, and LeadJourney shows what the buying produced.

  • Which ChatGPT campaigns produced the revenue we closed last quarter, not just the conversions Ads Manager reported?

  • What did the ads add to what organic ChatGPT already sends us?

  • What does a customer from ChatGPT Ads actually cost us, next to Google, Meta and LinkedIn?

  • How many deals started with a ChatGPT ad click and closed through Google brand search?

  • Which ad groups send buyers, and which send clicks we should stop paying for?

  • How long does a ChatGPT Ads lead take to close, and does a 30-day window cover it?

LeadJourney and Ads Manager

Where Ads Manager ends and LeadJourney starts

Ads Manager reports the conversions the OpenAI pixel and the Conversions API send inside its windows, for ChatGPT ad clicks. Both stop at OpenAI's edge.

OpenAI Ads Manager compared with LeadJourney, capability by capability
Where the click is recordedOpenAI Ads ManagerIn the browser through the OpenAI pixel, which keeps the oppref in a first-party cookie for 30 days, or by your own server, which has to store the oppref and pass it on.With LeadJourneyServer-side and first-party, on your own domain, so the click and the conversion are recorded even when the pixel is blocked.

Organic ChatGPTOpenAI Ads ManagerNot an ad click, so not in Ads Manager: visits from links ChatGPT cites are nobody's campaign. With LeadJourneyIts own source beside the campaigns, so paid and earned ChatGPT are compared on revenue instead of merged.
Other channelsOpenAI Ads ManagerReports ChatGPT Ads only, so its conversions overlap with what Google and Meta claim. With LeadJourneyOne model across paid, organic, referral and AI search, so every sale is counted once.
Consent and GDPROpenAI Ads ManagerThe pixel sets its cookies only with measurement consent, and events blocked while consent is off are not sent later. With LeadJourneyFirst-party by design and processed in the EU, at 95%+ accuracy, with a DPA.

Keep Ads Manager. Feed it better data.

Ads Manager stays where you plan and buy. LeadJourney fills in the measurement underneath and returns the closed deals and orders OpenAI cannot see on its own, so your ChatGPT campaigns are judged on revenue and optimise on it.

FAQ

What ChatGPT advertisers ask before connecting

If yours is not here, our team answers in the chat within a few minutes.

How is this different from the ChatGPT integration?

Two kinds of ChatGPT traffic, two pages. The ChatGPT integration is earned traffic: a reader clicks a link ChatGPT cites in its answer, and LeadJourney recognises the referral with no setup. This page is paid traffic: a reader clicks an ad OpenAI places beneath an answer. Paid clicks are credited to their ChatGPT campaign, earned visits stay on the organic ChatGPT source, and when one buyer did both, each gets its share of the deal.

Where do ads in ChatGPT appear, and who sees them?

OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the United States in February 2026, for adults on the Free and Go plans; Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts have no ads. An ad appears beneath an answer, labelled as sponsored and set apart from it. In May 2026 OpenAI opened its Ads Manager at ads.openai.com to US businesses as a self-serve beta, with CPC bidding, a pixel and a Conversions API.

Can I see the conversation that led to the click?

No, and neither can LeadJourney. OpenAI says advertisers do not get chats, chat history, memories or personal details, only aggregated performance such as views and clicks. What LeadJourney records starts at your site: the paid click with its oppref, the landing page, every later visit, the lead and the deal. That is enough to tell which campaign and which ad group produced revenue.

What is oppref?

OpenAI's click identifier for ChatGPT ads, which it calls an opaque attribution identifier. The OpenAI pixel reads it from the landing page URL and keeps it in a first-party cookie, __oppref, for 30 days. The Conversions API does not capture it for you: your own system has to store it and pass it on unchanged. LeadJourney captures it server-side with the click and keeps it on the journey, so it is there when the deal closes. OpenAI's tracking template can also add UTM parameters with macros such as {campaign_id} and {ad_id}.

Does LeadJourney replace the OpenAI pixel?

It can run alongside it or instead of it. OpenAI describes the pixel and the Conversions API as complementary, and when the same event arrives both ways with the same event ID under the same Pixel ID, it keeps the first one and ignores the other. LeadJourney's tracking is server-side, so it does not depend on the pixel, and each event it sends through the Conversions API carries an event ID, so a conversion the pixel also reports is counted once.

Why does Ads Manager report different conversions than my CRM?

Because it counts differently, not wrongly. Ads Manager credits a conversion inside a 7, 14 or 30 day click window, reports view-through conversions within a day of an impression as their own metric, dates results on the ad interaction by default, and asks you to allow at least a day for conversions to appear. Your CRM only knows the people who became leads and deals. LeadJourney shows both: Ads Manager's conversions where you buy, and the revenue ChatGPT ad clicks actually produced, measured once across every channel.

Does ChatGPT Ads tracking still work with ad blockers and declined cookie banners?

Yes, that is the point of tracking server-side. The click, the oppref and the visit are recorded on your own domain before an ad blocker, Safari or a declined banner can remove them, at 95%+ accuracy. The OpenAI pixel sends nothing while measurement consent is off, and does not send those events later; LeadJourney shows you the measured numbers.

Somebody clicked a ChatGPT ad and bought later through Google. Is the ad still credited?

In LeadJourney, yes. The ChatGPT click is stored on the visitor's LeadJourney Click ID, so when the same person comes back through Google brand search, an organic ChatGPT answer or a typed URL and converts, the ChatGPT campaign is still part of that journey. Multi-touch models then share the revenue between the ad and the channel that closed, instead of handing all of it to the search.

Which events can I send back to OpenAI?

Any CRM stage or paid order you map, sent through the Conversions API as one of OpenAI's standard events: a qualified lead as lead_created, a won deal or an order as order_created, with the value and its currency. OpenAI's list also has appointment_scheduled, subscription_created and trial_started, plus custom events. A conversion-optimised campaign bids for one standard event, and custom events cannot be optimisation goals, so map the stage you want bidding to learn from to a standard one.

A deal closes two months after the click. Is it still attributed?

In LeadJourney, yes: the journey has no window, so the deal is credited to the campaign that started it regardless of the cycle length. Ads Manager credits conversions inside a click window of 30 days at most, so for a long cycle map an early stage that predicts revenue, such as the qualified lead, as the event a conversion-optimised campaign learns from. The report that matches the late revenue to the ad lives in LeadJourney.

Is sending CRM data to OpenAI GDPR compliant?

An event carries the oppref, the event type, an event ID and, when there is one, the value and currency, and nothing for a stage you have not mapped. OpenAI requires any customer field sent as a match key, such as an email or a phone number, to be SHA-256 hashed. LeadJourney itself processes and stores data in the EU, signs a data processing agreement, and tracks first-party and server-side, so consent decisions are respected rather than worked around.

Does HubSpot connect to ChatGPT Ads?

Not natively. HubSpot's ads tool connects Meta, Google, LinkedIn, Microsoft and TikTok ad accounts, and ChatGPT Ads is not on that list. LeadJourney records the ChatGPT ad click itself, follows each lead into HubSpot to the deal next to every other channel, and sends the qualified leads and won deals back through OpenAI's Conversions API.

What do I need to connect ChatGPT Ads?

An active ad account in OpenAI's Ads Manager, and the CRM or shop where your revenue is recorded. Add the LeadJourney script, connect both and map stages to conversion events; most accounts are live in about 21 minutes, and our team will do the setup with you on a call if you prefer.

What does it cost?

The ChatGPT Ads integration is part of the platform rather than a paid add on. Plans are priced by ad spend instead of seats, so your whole team and your agency can share one workspace, and every plan starts with a 14 day free trial without a credit card.
