The gap

Shopify knows the order was paid. It does not know which ad started the journey.

Shopify Analytics attributes an order to the session that placed it, and it is right about that session. The clicks before the store, the channels outside Shopify's view and the customer's next five orders are where the picture stops.

Shopify attribution on its own

Right about the last session, blind to the ones before it

  • Shopify Analytics credits an order to a single session, so the ad that introduced the customer earlier in the journey earns nothing.
  • Attribution starts at the store. A click that landed on a blog, a landing page or a pre-launch page outside Shopify is never joined to the order.
  • Ad spend reaches Shopify only through its channel apps, so a ROAS that covers every platform you buy on is built in a spreadsheet.
  • The Meta and Google channel apps each report the same order to their own platform, so the platforms' conversion counts add up to more than your orders.
  • Returning customer sales and cohorts are reported by the month of the first order. The marketing channel that produced the repeat buyer is not in the report.
  • Organic social, influencer and AI search traffic arrive as referral or direct unless every link carries a UTM, so bio links and cited answers vanish as channels.
  • Pixels run in the shopper's browser, so ad blockers, Safari and declined consent banners thin the data the reports are built on.

Shopify with LeadJourney

One journey per customer, from the first click to the paid order

  • Every store visit is captured server-side at 95%+ accuracy, past ad blockers, Safari and declined banners.
  • The anonymous first click is stitched to the customer at checkout, so the ad that introduced them is credited alongside the one that closed.
  • Clicks that land on a blog or a landing page outside the store are followed into the store and onto the order.
  • Spend is pulled from Meta, Google, LinkedIn and Microsoft Ads automatically, so ROAS per campaign is calculated on paid order value across every platform.
  • One attribution model across every channel, so each order is counted once and the platforms' claims stop adding up to more than your revenue.
  • Repeat orders are credited to the channel and campaign that acquired the customer, so lifetime value is reported per channel.
  • Organic social, referral and AI search (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini) are tracked as their own channels, next to paid.

How it works

Shopify orders in, attributed revenue back out

Both directions run on their own once connected. The first is what makes Shopify revenue attribution possible across every channel, not only the last session. The second puts the paid order where the budget is decided.

  1. 1

Shopify revenue attribution from the first click to the paid order

The journey is recording before the shopper reaches the store.

    MetaGoogle AdsLinkedIn AdsYour store

Ad clicks, spend, store sessions, add to carts and click IDs are tracked server-side across paid, organic and AI search.

    Shopify

LeadJourney reads your orders, customers and checkouts as they happen, including repeat orders and refunds.

The order is matched to the journey that produced the customer, from the first anonymous click to the paid order.

Revenue, ROAS, cost per order and repeat order value, per channel, campaign and ad.

  2. 2

The order goes back to the ad platform that earned it

So bidding optimises on paid orders instead of add to carts.

    Shopify

An order is paid, a first-time customer is created, a returning customer orders again.

LeadJourney turns it into a purchase event with the order value and currency, matched to the click ID that started the journey.

    MetaGoogle AdsLinkedIn AdsMicrosoft Ads

The event reaches Meta, Google, LinkedIn and Microsoft Ads server to server, as an offline conversion.

Bidding learns which clicks become paying customers rather than abandoned carts, so budget moves to the campaigns that sell.

The return path

Paid Shopify orders, back in the ad account that earned them

An add to cart is not a result. Once Shopify marks the order paid, LeadJourney sends that outcome and its value to the platform that produced the click, so bidding learns from orders rather than from clicks and carts.

  • MetaConversions API

Order paid and first order, with order value and currency

  • Google AdsOffline conversion import

Orders matched on gclid, with the order value for value based bidding

  • LinkedIn AdsConversions API

Orders matched on li_fat_id, with the order value

  • Microsoft AdsOffline conversions

Orders matched on msclkid, with the order value

You choose what counts as a conversion

Map any Shopify event to any platform event. Order paid, first order, repeat order, or all three.

Value based bidding gets the real order value

The order total travels with the event, so tROAS and value based strategies optimise on what was paid instead of a flat conversion value.

Sent server to server

No pixel to fire, nothing for an ad blocker or a declined cookie banner to remove.

Reporting

The questions Shopify Analytics cannot answer

Every one of these is a report in LeadJourney rather than an export. Shopify stays the source of truth for orders, and LeadJourney supplies the source that produced them.

  • Which campaign produced the orders we shipped last month, counting the first click and not only the last?

  • What does a new customer actually cost us in ad spend, per channel?

  • Which channel brings the customers who order again, and which brings the ones who buy once on a discount?

  • How many orders came from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini last quarter?

  • Which landing pages turn ad clicks into paid orders instead of abandoned checkouts?

  • Which campaigns are buying add to carts that never become orders?

LeadJourney and Shopify Analytics

Where Shopify Analytics ends and LeadJourney starts

Shopify Analytics credits each order to the session that placed it, by UTM and referrer. It is right about what happens inside Shopify.

Shopify Analytics compared with LeadJourney, capability by capability
Shopify revenue attributionShopify AnalyticsEach order is credited to one session, the last with a recognised source inside Shopify's window, by UTM and referrer. With LeadJourneyEvery touch from the first ad click to the paid order, across every channel, with first click, last click, linear and position based models.
The click before the storeShopify AnalyticsNot seen. Attribution starts with a session on the store, so a click that landed on a blog or a landing page elsewhere is not joined to the order. With LeadJourneyCaptured server-side on any page carrying the script, followed into the store and stitched to the customer at checkout.
Ad spend and ROASShopify AnalyticsSpend appears where a Shopify channel app reports it. A ROAS across every platform you buy on is assembled elsewhere. With LeadJourneySpend pulled from Meta, Google, LinkedIn and Microsoft Ads, so ROAS is live per campaign on paid order value.
Repeat orders and lifetime valueShopify AnalyticsReturning customer sales and cohorts by the month of the first order, per customer. With LeadJourneyRepeat orders credited to the channel and campaign that acquired the customer, so lifetime value is reported per channel.
Purchase events back to the ad platformsShopify AnalyticsThe Meta and Google channel apps send each order to their own platform, and each platform counts the order for itself. With LeadJourneyOne server-side purchase event per paid order to every connected platform, with the order value, matched on the click ID that started the journey.
Organic social, influencers and AI searchShopify AnalyticsUTM and referrer based. A bio link without UTMs lands as referral or direct, and an AI assistant's citation is a referrer line rather than a channel. With LeadJourneyOrganic social, referral and AI search are their own channels next to paid, with ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini named.
Ad blockers, Safari and consentShopify AnalyticsPixels run in the shopper's browser, so blocked scripts and declined banners thin the data. With LeadJourneyServer-side and first-party, so the click and the order are recorded either way, at 95%+ accuracy.
Refunds and cancellationsShopify AnalyticsNetted in the sales reports, accurately. With LeadJourneyRead alongside the order, so the revenue a campaign is credited with is the revenue you kept.
Consent and GDPRShopify AnalyticsShopify's privacy settings and consent banner apply to the store. Third party pixels are yours to configure. With LeadJourneyFirst-party by design and processed in the EU, with a data processing agreement.

Keep Shopify Analytics. Add the click before the store.

Shopify stays the system of record for orders and the place your team reads sales. LeadJourney fills in the journey in front of the store and hands the paid order to the platforms where the budget is spent.

Before LeadJourney, we had no reliable tracking concept for our five-figure ad spend. We were manually building spreadsheet and CRM reports, inaccurate and time-consuming. Within two days, everything was set up. For the first time, I know exactly what I pay per lead and which campaigns actually bring in the best-qualified prospects.

FAQ

What store owners ask before connecting

If yours is not here, our team answers in the chat within a few minutes.

How does LeadJourney match a Shopify order to an ad click?

The journey is recorded server-side from the first anonymous visit, on the store and on any other page carrying the script. When the shopper checks out, that session is stitched to the Shopify customer, and every order on that customer from then on is joined to the same journey. Nothing has to be written into order notes or metafields for this to work.

Does LeadJourney write anything into my Shopify store?

No. The integration is read only: LeadJourney reads orders, customers, checkouts and refunds as they happen rather than as a nightly batch, and writes nothing back. Your theme, your checkout and your inventory are unchanged, and Transparent Logs show every record that moved and when.

How is Shopify revenue attribution in LeadJourney different from Shopify's own marketing attribution?

Shopify credits each order to one session, the last with a recognised source inside its window, by UTM and referrer, and it only sees sessions on the store. LeadJourney records every session server-side from the first click, including pages outside the store, joins spend from every platform you buy on, and lets you switch between first click, last click, linear and position based models. Keep both open: Shopify for the store, LeadJourney for the journey that led to it.

Does the script work on Shopify's checkout pages?

Theme scripts do not run on Shopify's checkout, so LeadJourney's script is added as a custom pixel under Settings, Customer events, where it tracks checkout and the purchase like any other page. The orders themselves are read from Shopify directly, so the revenue is right even where a browser blocks a pixel.

Are repeat orders attributed too?

Yes. A returning customer's orders are credited to the channel and campaign that acquired them, so lifetime value is reported per channel rather than as a first order snapshot. First and repeat orders can also go back to the ad platforms as separate events, which is how a new customer campaign is optimised on new customers.

How are refunds and cancelled orders handled?

Refunds and cancellations are read alongside the order they belong to, so the revenue a campaign is credited with reflects what you kept. A campaign that produces orders which come back in week two looks different from one that produces customers who stay.

Which Shopify events can I send back to Meta and Google?

Any event you map: order paid, first order, repeat order, or all of them. Each event carries the order value and currency, and it reaches Meta through the Conversions API, Google Ads as an offline conversion import matched on gclid, LinkedIn through the Conversions API and Microsoft Ads matched on msclkid.

A customer orders three weeks after the first ad click. Is the order still attributed?

Yes. The journey has no window, so the order is credited to the campaign that started it, however long the shopper took to decide. The ad platforms apply their own attribution settings to the events they receive, so late orders mainly improve optimisation there. The report that matches revenue to the ad lives in LeadJourney.

Do I need a developer?

No. The script is one paste into your theme or a custom pixel, connecting the store is an approval screen, and mapping events is a settings page. Most stores are live in about 21 minutes, and our team will do the setup with you on a call if you prefer.

Is the Shopify integration GDPR compliant?

Yes. LeadJourney processes and stores data in the EU, signs a data processing agreement, and tracks first-party and server-side so consent decisions are respected rather than worked around. Payment details never reach LeadJourney: it reads order totals, status and customer records, not card data.

What does it cost?

The Shopify integration is part of the platform rather than a paid add on. Plans are priced on tracked events instead of seats, so your whole team and your agency can share one workspace, and every plan starts with a 14 day free trial without a credit card.
