The gap

Gemini cites your site. Your analytics hands the visit to Google organic and direct.

Gemini is not one place: the web app, the phone app, and the model behind AI Overviews inside Search. GA4 files those as a referral, as google / organic and as direct. None is named Gemini.

Gemini traffic in your analytics today

Absorbed by Google organic, or by direct

  • A click from gemini.google.com is a referral in GA4, filed under a google.com hostname, so anyone scanning the source column reads it as more Google.
  • A click from an AI Overview or from AI Mode carries google.com as the referrer, so GA4 counts it as Google organic, indistinguishable from a click on a blue link.
  • A click from the Gemini app on Android or iOS often arrives with no referrer at all, and no referrer means direct.
  • GA4 records the visit in the browser, so an ad blocker or a declined cookie banner removes the session before Gemini gets any credit.
  • GA4 counts sessions and key events, so the trail ends at the form. Whether the lead qualified or the deal closed is a question for the CRM.
  • Because the credit lands on Google organic, the SEO report absorbs it: rankings look like they are working, and nobody learns that an assistant, not a results page, sent the buyer.
  • Telling Gemini apart means a custom channel group with a regex for gemini.google.com, maintained by hand, and it still stops at the session.

Gemini with LeadJourney

One source, split from Google organic on arrival, followed to revenue

  • The tracking script recognises a gemini.google.com referral server-side as the page loads and reports it as one source called Gemini, not as Google organic and not as a referral row.
  • Google organic and Gemini become two lines, so the SEO number gets honest at the same moment the AI search number appears.
  • The visit is recorded server-side and first-party, at 95%+ accuracy, past ad blockers and declined banners.
  • The visit is stitched to the lead at form submit, and the journey follows the lead through your CRM, stage by stage, to closed won.
  • Gemini sits in the same multi-touch model as Google Ads, Google organic, Meta, LinkedIn and the other AI engines, so a Gemini first touch and a paid brand-search close are one journey, not two sessions.
  • Only what can be proven is called Gemini. A click from an AI Overview or AI Mode sends google.com and stays Google organic, so the Gemini line never overstates itself.
  • Nothing to configure. The source is on from the first page view, with no channel group, no regex and no filter to maintain.

How it works

Gemini attribution in two steps: split the visit from Google organic, then follow it to revenue

Both run on their own once the script is on the site: gemini.google.com becomes a source of its own instead of more Google, then the revenue behind a citation.

  1. 1

Gemini traffic tracking from the first page view

The visit is recognised on the server, before it can be counted as an organic click.

    Gemini

A reader asks Gemini a question, Gemini cites your page as a source, and the reader clicks through from gemini.google.com.

    Your website

The tracking script reads the referrer server-side on arrival and files the visit under Gemini, not under Google organic and not under a referral row.

The landing page, the pages read and every later visit join one anonymous first-party journey, so the same reader returning through a Google search a week later is still one person.

When the reader fills in a form or books a call, the journey is stitched to the lead, and Gemini is on record as the first touch.

  2. 2

Follow the lead through your CRM and compare Gemini with every other channel

Google organic and Gemini, side by side, in revenue rather than sessions.

With a two-way CRM connected, the journey is written onto the record: Gemini as the source, the page it cited, and every touch that followed.

    HubSpotSalesforcePipedriveAttio

Your CRM reports the outcome as it happens: qualified, opportunity, deal value and closed won, read back into the journey as the stages change.

Gemini appears in the traffic channel report as its own line, right under Google organic: visits, leads, pipeline and won revenue for each, so you can see what moved from one to the other.

The multi-touch models weigh Gemini against Google Ads, Google organic, Meta, LinkedIn and the other AI engines, so you learn whether it opens deals, closes them, or both.

Your CRM closes the loop

Your CRM shows what the Gemini visit was worth

Gemini is Google's, but it is not Google Ads: no campaign, no spend, no conversion to send back. Its value only appears in the CRM, so LeadJourney follows every Gemini lead there and reads the outcome back out.

  • HubSpotTwo-way sync

Contacts and Deals, with stage, amount and close date, read as they change.

  • SalesforceTwo-way sync

Won revenue on the Gemini line

The Gemini line in your reports carries won revenue from the CRM, so an assistant that sends fewer visits than Google organic but larger deals is visible for what it is.

Gemini and Google organic, compared where it counts

You see how many Gemini leads qualify, how many stall, and how that compares with Google organic, ChatGPT and the other engines, before deciding how much content to write for AI answers.

No lookback window

A Gemini visit in January that becomes a deal in April still credits Gemini. The journey runs until the deal closes, not for a lookback period.

Reporting

The questions GA4 cannot answer about Gemini

Each of these is a report filtered to the Gemini source, not a channel group and an export. The Gemini line simply exists now, next to Google organic, and it runs all the way to revenue.

  • How many leads did Gemini send us last month, and how many of them qualified?

  • How much won revenue started with a Gemini citation this quarter?

  • How much of what we reported as Google organic this year was Gemini?

  • Which of our pages does Gemini cite, and which of those turn readers into leads?

  • Does Gemini open deals that Google Ads later closes, or close deals that our content opened?

  • How does Gemini compare with ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude on leads and average deal size?

LeadJourney and Google Analytics 4

Where GA4 ends and LeadJourney starts

GA4 sorts sessions and key events into its default channel groups, and Gemini, being Google's own assistant, has nowhere separate to land in them.

Google Analytics 4 compared with LeadJourney, capability by capability
Gemini attributionGoogle Analytics 4No Gemini source. gemini.google.com is a referral under a google.com hostname, AI Overviews and AI Mode are Google organic, and the app is direct. With LeadJourneyOne source called Gemini, recognised server-side on arrival, separated from Google organic and reported next to the other AI engines. Clicks out of Search stay organic, because that is all they send.
Where the visit is recordedGoogle Analytics 4In the browser, through the gtag.js tag, so ad blockers and declined consent remove the session. With LeadJourneyServer-side and first-party, so the visit is recorded past blockers and banners, at 95%+ accuracy.
What is countedGoogle Analytics 4Sessions, engaged sessions and the key events your site fires, per channel. With LeadJourneyLeads, qualified leads, pipeline and won revenue, per source.
RevenueGoogle Analytics 4Purchase and key event values passed at event time. Revenue that closes in the CRM weeks later never appears. With LeadJourneyWon CRM revenue, attributed to the Gemini visit that started the journey.
The attribution windowGoogle Analytics 4Lookback windows of up to 90 days on key events. A deal that closes later credits nothing. With LeadJourneyNo window. The journey runs from the Gemini click to closed won, however long the sales cycle.
Other touchesGoogle Analytics 4Data-driven attribution across the sessions GA4 can tie to one user, usually a browser cookie. A new device starts a new user. With LeadJourneyGemini weighed against Google Ads, Google organic, Meta, LinkedIn and the other AI engines in one multi-touch model, joined at the lead.
Landing pagesGoogle Analytics 4The landing page report shows sessions per page. Which cited page produced a lead is an exploration you build. With LeadJourneyLeads and revenue per landing page, filtered to Gemini, so you see which pages Gemini cites and which of those convert.
SetupGoogle Analytics 4A custom channel group with a regex for gemini.google.com and every other AI domain, maintained by hand as new engines appear. With LeadJourneyNothing. The script recognises Gemini and the other AI engines and reports each as its own source.
Consent and GDPRGoogle Analytics 4Needs consent to set its cookies. Consent mode models the sessions that declined. With LeadJourneyFirst-party by design and processed in the EU, at 95%+ accuracy, with a DPA.

Keep GA4. Stop letting Gemini pass for Google organic.

GA4 stays where you read page behaviour. LeadJourney adds the source GA4 does not have and the revenue GA4 cannot see, so the next time somebody asks whether the SEO number is really SEO, the answer is two lines from your CRM.

Setup

Gemini on its own line in about 21 minutes, with nothing to do on Google's side

There is no Gemini account to connect, no Search Console to link and no channel group to build. The time goes on the script and your CRM.

  1. 1About 5 minutes

Add a single line of code

Paste the LeadJourney script into your site or your GTM container. From the first page view it reads referrers server-side and reports Gemini as its own source, with Google organic corrected at the same time.

  2. 2About 10 minutes

    Connect your CRM

Sign in to HubSpot, Salesforce, Pipedrive, Attio or Close and pick the pipelines in scope. From then on every Gemini lead is followed through its stages, and won revenue lands on the Gemini source instead of on organic.

  3. 3Same day

    Ask the question

Open the traffic channel report and Gemini is a line with leads, pipeline and revenue on it, right under Google organic, or ask Atlas in plain words. Nothing was configured for Gemini. It was recognised from the first visit.

Before LeadJourney, we had no reliable tracking concept for our five-figure ad spend. We were manually building spreadsheet and CRM reports, inaccurate and time-consuming. Within two days, everything was set up. For the first time, I know exactly what I pay per lead and which campaigns actually bring in the best-qualified prospects.

FAQ

What marketers ask before trusting the Gemini line

If yours is not here, our team answers in the chat within a few minutes.

Why does my Gemini traffic show up as Google organic?

Because Gemini and Google Search share a domain. A click from an AI Overview or from AI Mode leaves from google.com, which every analytics tool has always counted as Google organic search, and nothing in the request says an assistant wrote the answer. A click from the Gemini app at gemini.google.com is different: GA4 files it as a referral, but under a google.com hostname, so in practice it gets read, and often filtered, as Google too. Nothing is broken; GA4 simply has no Gemini bucket.

How does Gemini attribution work?

The tracking script reads the referrer server-side as the page loads, recognises gemini.google.com, and files the visit under a source called Gemini rather than under Google organic. The landing page and every later visit join one first-party journey, the journey is stitched to the lead at form submit, and the lead is followed through your CRM to closed won. Gemini then appears in every report and every attribution model as a source of its own, directly under Google organic, with leads, pipeline and revenue on it.

Do I have to configure anything for Gemini traffic tracking?

No. There is no Google account to connect for it, no Search Console to link, no channel group to build and no regex to maintain. Once the LeadJourney script is on the site, Gemini is reported as its own source from the first page view, alongside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot, Grok and DeepSeek.

Can LeadJourney separate AI Overview and AI Mode clicks from normal Google organic?

No, and neither can anything else, because those clicks leave from google.com exactly like a click on a blue link and the request carries nothing that says an assistant wrote the answer. The Gemini line in LeadJourney is the Gemini app, gemini.google.com, which does identify itself. We would rather show a line that is right than a bigger one that is modelled.

What about clicks from the Gemini app on a phone?

A link opened from the Gemini app on Android or iOS often carries no referrer, so it arrives as direct for every analytics tool, LeadJourney included. We say so rather than model a number for it. If that reader converts, the journey is stitched to the lead and followed to revenue like any other direct visit.

Can I see which of my pages Gemini cites?

From the other end, yes. The landing page report filtered to Gemini lists every page a reader arrived on after Gemini cited it, with visits, leads and won revenue per page. It is not a list of every citation Gemini ever made, only of the ones that were clicked, which is the list that matters for revenue.

Does this tell me whether Gemini is taking traffic from my rankings?

It tells you the half a website can see. Once Gemini and Google organic are two lines, you can watch leads and revenue per line over time, see whether one grows as the other shrinks, and see which pages are involved. What no website can count is the answers where Gemini cited you and nobody clicked. The revenue view is the honest one anyway: a source that sends fewer, better visits can be worth more than the one it replaced.

A Gemini visit turns into a deal three months later. Is it still attributed?

Yes. The journey has no window, so the deal is credited to the Gemini visit that started it however long the cycle takes. GA4's lookback windows would have dropped the connection weeks earlier, which is one reason AI search looks smaller in GA4 than it is.

Is tracking Gemini referrals GDPR compliant? Does anything go to Google?

Yes, and no. LeadJourney reads the referrer the browser already sends, on servers in the EU, first-party, so consent decisions are respected rather than worked around. Nothing is sent to Google and nothing is requested from it; recognising the referral is reading a header. The reader is only identified when they fill in your form, and a data processing agreement is part of every plan.

Do I need a developer?

No. The script is one line in your site or your GTM container, the CRM connection is an OAuth sign in, and Gemini itself needs nothing. Most accounts are live in about 21 minutes, and our team will do the setup with you on a call if you prefer.

What does it cost?

Gemini tracking is part of the platform rather than a paid add on. Plans are priced on tracked events instead of seats, so your whole team and your agency can share one workspace, and every plan starts with a 14 day free trial without a credit card.
