The gap

Outbrain sees the click on the article. Your CRM sees the buyer.

Native readers click out of curiosity and buy later, often through another channel. Outbrain's own matching is short, so the conversion it counts and the revenue in your CRM rarely line up.

Outbrain Ads attribution on its own

Honest about Outbrain, blind to what happens next

  • Where Outbrain sets its first-party cookie, its pixel matches users to conversions for up to 24 hours, so the reader who buys next week is not an Outbrain conversion.
  • The pixel fires in the browser, and in the EU and UK Outbrain records a conversion only with an IAB compliant consent banner and a yes.
  • A view counts too: a reader who saw a viewable ad and converted within 24 hours is reported as a view-through conversion.
  • Imported conversions count for optimisation only inside 72 hours of the click, which a lead that closes in three weeks never meets.
  • Publisher and section blocklists are decided on the pixel's events, so a section that sends cheap sign ups and no buyers looks like a winner.
  • Outbrain only reports Outbrain, so its conversions overlap with what Google and Meta claim for the same customer.
  • Spend never meets revenue, so cost per closed deal per campaign is a spreadsheet someone builds before the budget review.

Outbrain Ads with LeadJourney

One journey per buyer, from the publisher click to the closed deal

  • Every Outbrain click is captured server-side with its click ID, on your own domain, past ad blockers and Safari, at 95%+ accuracy.
  • The click is kept on the visitor's LeadJourney Click ID, so when they return through brand search weeks later, Outbrain is still in the journey.
  • Publisher and section arrive on the visit through Outbrain's tracking macros, so revenue is reported per site that sent the click.
  • The lead is followed through your CRM, stage by stage, to closed won, or through Shopify and Stripe to the paid order.
  • Qualified leads, won deals and orders go back to Outbrain as S2S postbacks with value, currency and the click ID, so bidding learns from revenue.
  • Outbrain is measured next to Google, Meta, Taboola, organic and AI search in one multi-touch model, so each sale is counted once.
  • Spend is pulled automatically, so ROAS and cost per closed deal are live per campaign and ad.

How it works

Outbrain Ads attribution in, closed deals back out

All three run on their own once connected. The first makes real Outbrain tracking possible, the second teaches bidding which clicks become revenue, the third explains why Outbrain and your CRM report different numbers.

  1. 1

Server-side Outbrain tracking for every click

The journey starts recording before the Outbrain pixel would even fire.

    Outbrain

LeadJourney imports your campaigns, ads and daily spend, and captures every click with the click ID Outbrain appends to the landing page URL.

    Your website

On your site, sessions, page views, form fills and checkouts are tracked server-side on your own domain, past ad blockers and Safari.

The click is kept on the visitor's LeadJourney Click ID, with the publisher and section it came from, and joined to the lead at the form or the order.

Revenue, ROAS and cost per closed deal, live per campaign, ad and publisher, next to every other channel.

  2. 2

Send qualified leads, won deals and orders back with S2S

So bidding optimises on buyers instead of clicks.

    HubSpotSalesforcePipedriveShopify

Your CRM or shop reports the outcome: stage changes, deal value, closed won, the paid order.

LeadJourney matches the outcome to the Outbrain click ID that started it, within 30 days of the click, and attaches the value, the currency and an order ID.

    Outbrain

Within about 15 minutes, the postback reaches Outbrain server to server under the exact name of your event-based conversion, upper and lower case included, with no tag on your site.

Bidding learns which publishers and readers become revenue, so lead quality rises and the cost per customer falls.

  3. 3

Two counts, each honest about what it measures

Outbrain matches inside a short window. Your CRM records the buyer.

    Outbrain

A reader clicks your ad on a news site, reads the page and leaves. Outbrain's pixel sees no conversion that day.

A week later the same person searches your brand on Google and buys, and that is the visit your CRM or shop recorded.

LeadJourney measures the journey from the first click to revenue on its own, so the Outbrain campaign that started it gets its share.

The Amplify dashboard's conversions beside the revenue Outbrain clicks actually produced, so the budget review sees both and knows why they differ.

Your CRM closes the loop

The revenue signal comes from the CRM or shop you already run

LeadJourney follows every Outbrain lead into your CRM, or every Outbrain shopper to the paid order, and reads the outcome back out, so the value ends up on the campaign that earned it.

You choose what counts as a conversion

Map any CRM stage or order to an Outbrain conversion. Qualified lead, closed won, purchase, or all of them.

Lead quality becomes the optimisation target

When Outbrain learns which leads qualify and which stall, it bids for more of the first kind, so the price per qualified lead falls.

Sent server to server

No tag to fire, nothing for an ad blocker to remove, and no code snippet on your site for the conversion.

Reporting

The questions the Amplify dashboard cannot answer

Every one of these is a report in LeadJourney rather than an export project. Amplify stays where you buy, and LeadJourney shows what the buying produced.

  • Which Outbrain campaigns produced the revenue we closed last quarter, not just the conversions the pixel counted?

  • Which publishers and sections send buyers, and which only send cheap sign ups we should block?

  • What does a customer from Outbrain actually cost us?

  • How many sales started with an Outbrain click and closed through Google brand search a week later?

  • How does Outbrain compare with Taboola, Meta and Google on cost per qualified lead?

  • How long does an Outbrain lead take to close, and how much of it happens after Outbrain stops matching?

LeadJourney and Outbrain

Where the Amplify dashboard ends and LeadJourney starts

Amplify credits the conversions the Outbrain pixel, your postbacks and your imports report inside the window you set. All of them stop at Outbrain's edge.

Outbrain Amplify compared with LeadJourney, capability by capability
Where the click is recordedOutbrain AmplifyIn the browser through the Outbrain pixel, so Outbrain tracking starts from what the pixel or your own S2S setup reports. With LeadJourneyServer-side and first-party, on your own domain, so the click and the conversion are recorded even when the pixel is blocked.
What earns the creditOutbrain AmplifyA click, or a viewable impression followed by a conversion within 24 hours, reported as click, view, or both. With LeadJourneyThe click that reached your site, joined to the lead and the deal it became.
How long a click is rememberedOutbrain AmplifyThe window you set per conversion. The pixel's first-party match lasts up to 24 hours, and imported conversions optimise only inside 72 hours. With LeadJourneyNo window. The journey runs from the first click to closed won, however long the cycle takes.
What counts as a conversionOutbrain AmplifyURL-based and event-based conversions from your pixel, your postbacks or a CSV import. With LeadJourneyAny CRM stage or paid order you map, with the value attached: qualified lead, closed won, purchase.

Publishers and sectionsOutbrain AmplifyBlocked or bid on by the conversions the pixel reported, whatever those leads later do.With LeadJourneyRanked by the revenue their clicks produced, so the blocklist removes sections that never send a buyer.
Other channelsOutbrain AmplifyReports Outbrain clicks only, so its numbers overlap with what Google and Meta claim. With LeadJourneyOne model across paid, native, organic, referral and AI search, so every sale is counted once.
Consent and GDPROutbrain AmplifyIn the EU and UK the pixel records a conversion only with an IAB compliant consent banner and the reader's consent. With LeadJourneyFirst-party by design and processed in the EU, at 95%+ accuracy, with a DPA.

Keep Amplify. Feed it better data.

Amplify stays where you plan and buy. LeadJourney fills in the measurement underneath and returns the closed deals and orders Outbrain cannot see on its own, so your campaigns are judged on revenue and optimise on it.

  1. 1About 5 minutes

Add a single line of code

Paste the LeadJourney script into your site or your GTM container. Keep Outbrain's auto-tracking or LeadJourney's auto-tagging on so the click ID reaches the page, and add utm_source=outbrain with {{publisher_name}} and {{section_name}} to the tracking code.

  2. 2About 10 minutes

    Connect Outbrain and your CRM

Paste an Outbrain API token, or enter your Outbrain login once, and pick the ad accounts to sync. The last 180 days are imported. Tokens last 30 days, so you reconnect once a month.

  3. 3Same day

    Map stages to Outbrain conversions

Create an event-based conversion in Outbrain for each stage you want it to learn from, and map it under exactly the same name, upper and lower case included. Each stage change then goes back as an S2S postback with its value.

FAQ

What Outbrain advertisers ask before connecting

If yours is not here, our team answers in the chat within a few minutes.

Does LeadJourney replace the Outbrain pixel?

It can run alongside it or instead of it. LeadJourney's tracking is server-side, so it does not depend on the pixel, and its conversions reach Outbrain as S2S postbacks, which need no code on your site. If the pixel keeps tracking the same action, give the postback its own event-based conversion and mark one of the two as included in total conversions, as Outbrain recommends, so the same sale is not counted twice in your reports.

How is this different from setting up Outbrain S2S tracking myself?

The S2S postback is a pipe: it moves conversions you already have. The hard part is having the right ones. Outbrain asks you to capture the click ID from the landing page URL, store it with the visitor, and send it back with the exact, case-sensitive name of an event-based conversion when the conversion happens. LeadJourney captures the click ID server-side, follows the lead through your CRM or the order through your shop, and sends a postback for each mapped stage within about 15 minutes, with the value and an order ID. A hand-built setup only ever knows what your website knows, which is still just the sign up.

Why does Outbrain report different conversions than my CRM?

Because each counts something else. Outbrain counts the conversions its pixel, your postbacks and your imports report inside the window you set, and adds view-through conversions within 24 hours of a viewable impression. Where it sets its first-party cookie, its pixel matches users to conversions for up to 24 hours. Your CRM records the people who became leads and customers, whenever that happened. LeadJourney shows both: Outbrain's conversions where you buy, and the revenue Outbrain clicks actually produced, measured on its own.

Does Outbrain conversion tracking still work with ad blockers and Safari?

With LeadJourney, yes, that is the point of tracking server-side. The click, the click ID and the visit are recorded on your own domain before an ad blocker or Safari's limits can remove them, at 95%+ accuracy. The Amplify dashboard keeps reporting what the pixel can see; LeadJourney shows you the measured numbers.

A reader clicked an Outbrain ad and bought a week later through Google. Is Outbrain still credited?

In LeadJourney, yes. The Outbrain click is stored on the visitor's LeadJourney Click ID, so when the same person comes back through Google brand search, a ChatGPT answer or a typed URL and converts, Outbrain is still part of that journey. Multi-touch models then share the revenue between Outbrain and the channel that closed, instead of handing all of it to the search.

Outbrain is part of Teads now. Does this still apply?

Yes. Outbrain bought Teads in 2025 and the company took the Teads name. Outbrain's performance business runs as Outbrain Direct Response by Teads, campaigns are still bought in the Amplify dashboard, and the click ID, the pixel and the S2S postback documented in Outbrain's help center are the ones this integration works with.

Which conversions can I send back to Outbrain?

Any CRM stage or paid order you map: marketing qualified, sales qualified, deal won, a Shopify or Stripe purchase, an approved affiliate sale, or all of them. Each one needs an event-based conversion created in Outbrain with the same name, spelled and capitalised exactly the same, and each postback carries an order ID and, whenever the value is above 0, the revenue in your workspace's reporting currency, so the campaign is judged on revenue rather than a flat lead value.

Can I block publishers and sections on revenue?

Yes, once publisher and section reach your site. Outbrain's tracking code takes macros such as {{publisher_name}} and {{section_name}}, and with them in your campaign's tracking settings, LeadJourney reports revenue and cost per closed deal per site that sent the click. The sections that send sign ups and never a buyer are then the ones to block.

The Outbrain pixel already tracks orders on my Shopify store. What does this add?

The pixel reports the orders it sees in the browser. LeadJourney reads the paid order from Shopify and sends it to Outbrain server to server with its value, so an order the pixel missed still reaches Outbrain, and the same order is attributed next to Meta, Google and email in one model.

Does HubSpot connect to Outbrain?

Not natively. HubSpot's ads tool connects Meta, Google, LinkedIn, Microsoft and TikTok ad accounts, and Outbrain is not on that list. LeadJourney records the Outbrain click itself, follows each lead into HubSpot to the deal next to every other channel, and sends the qualified leads and won deals back to Outbrain.

A deal closes three weeks after the click. Is it still attributed?

In LeadJourney, yes: the journey has no window, so the deal is credited to the campaign that started it regardless of the cycle length. On Outbrain's side, imported conversions count for optimisation only inside 72 hours of the click, and LeadJourney sends postbacks only within 30 days of the click, so for a long cycle map an early stage that predicts revenue, such as the qualified lead, as the conversion bidding learns from. The report that matches the late revenue to the ad lives in LeadJourney.

Is sending CRM data to Outbrain GDPR compliant?

A postback carries the Outbrain click ID, the conversion name, the value and an order ID, not the customer's name or email. You control which stages are sent, and nothing is sent that you have not mapped. LeadJourney itself processes and stores data in the EU, signs a data processing agreement, and tracks first-party and server-side, so consent decisions are respected rather than worked around.

Do I need a developer?

No. Connecting Outbrain is pasting an API token or entering your Outbrain login once, the CRM connection is a sign in, and mapping stages to conversions is a settings screen. Most accounts are live in about 21 minutes, and our team will do the setup with you on a call if you prefer.

How does the Outbrain connection work?

There is no Outbrain sign in button. You paste an Outbrain API token, or enter your Outbrain username and password once, and LeadJourney never stores the password. One login can reach several ad accounts, and you pick which ones to sync. Outbrain's tokens last 30 days and cannot be refreshed, so after 30 days you reconnect.

Where does the click ID come from?

LeadJourney reads dicbo, ob_click_id and obclid as the Outbrain click ID. It only has to reach your landing page: keep Outbrain's auto-tracking on, which appends dicbo to every ad URL, or turn on auto-tagging in LeadJourney. If neither is on, add obclid={{ob_click_id}} to the campaign's suffix tracking code.

What does it cost?

The Outbrain Ads integration is part of the platform rather than a paid add on. Plans are priced by the marketing spend you track, not by seats, so your whole team can share one workspace, and every plan starts with a 14 day free trial without a credit card.
